Sci-fi fans rejoice; and even those who do not embrace the genre should be excited about the new film, Prometheus. The action flick directed by Ridley Scott is baked in futuristic goodness but still has the ingredients to make it a well-rounded, though slightly predictable, piece of work.

The story revolves around a team of scientists who journey to an outer part of the universe in order to hopefully discover the origins of mankind. Obviously people aren’t any more intelligent in the future because even now in 2012 I know that is never a good idea. The group is led by Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and Charlie Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green), a couple who seem to have found the key to human existence. Also on board the spaceship Prometheus (now you get it) is Meredith Vickers (Charlize Theron), a woman who seems to be the one with the most seniority but the least amount of faith.

The movie has been bounced around as a prequel to the 1979 sci-fi sensation, Alien. Though there are a few subtle references it is easily one that stands alone and can be enjoyed having never seen another Alien film.  This story is well crafted so that it keeps you engaged the entire time. As with most movies in this genre you sort of know what is going to happen but you can still appreciate the ride.

The film looks amazing and captures not only the essence of deep space but at times the grit and feel of earlier classics. The picture was shot on the James Bond lot in London and they certainly used that entire, vast soundstage. The technology is fun to watch and it is always intriguing to see what sort of new gadgets the filmmakers bring out.

All of us have at one time or another questioned the origins of mankind. That premise alone makes this one intriguing to watch. You sort of want them to explore new ideas and concepts even if they can only lead back to the true answer. This film never gets preachy in its idea. It brings up lots of conversation starting questions but leaves the final decision up to the watcher. It was creative at times and visually makes up for any holes in plot.

Rapace earned her recognition in the original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy and here American audiences can get on the fan wagon as well. Noomi is such a strong, emotional, even volatile actress and she uses all of those elements to create a character you can identify with and root for. The film also stars Michael Fassbender as David. Fassbender is another highly talented actor who hasn’t quite exploded into mainstream. His role in last years, Shame, helped jump start that a little and hopefully this will solidify him as a front runner. Sadly Theron is given very little to do in this one but of course she certainly shines when called upon. Last but not least Idris Elba plays the captain of the ship, Janek. Many will try and place him and eventually land on his small stint on THE OFFICE as Charles Miner.

Prometheus is rated R for sci-fi violence including some intense images, and brief language. There are a couple of adult moments involving sensuality but they are brief and fleeting. The main thing to be concerned about with younger viewers is the intense images and violence. Lots of adult drama and peril in this one. I give it a solid 4 out of 5 laser lights. It stayed true to the genre without alienating other movie fans. It has a lot to offer anyone who likes action filled, thought provoking, theater outings.
