The Amazing Spider-Man 2

If there were truth in advertising The Amazing Spider-Man 2 would actually be called, "The Emotional, Wishy-Washy, Indecisive, and often times Annoying Spider-Man 2". But it would be hard to get all of that on the marquee. Most fans are wanting and deserve amazing and although this one is wall to wall action there is way too much clutter to go with it.

Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) and Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) are graduating high school and moving into the real world. Sort of. They struggle with their relationship and much of the film is them going back and forth with this unnecessary discussion. At one point Gwen says, "You keep doing this over and over and I can't go on living my life like this." As if she is 35 and not 18. There is also the emotional weight that Peter carries in regards to his own parents, Gwen's dad, his aunt, and trying to save the world. He whines so much you expect (and want) Tony Stark to show up and slap some sense into him and tell him to man up. Even Anakin Skywalker never cried this much.

Luckily for fans, and all viewers, there is a lot of action in this one to balance out the rest. In fact we almost get our quota of summer action in this one film. Once the bad guys are established and Spider-Man has made them mad enough that they want to destroy the world the pace picks up. Jamie Foxx is decent as timid nerd turned angry electricity man called Electro. You sort of feel sorry for him but at the same time his attitude conversion makes zero sense. Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn is a little easier to understand. Yet by the time we get to his part of the story time has run out and leaves little opportunity to really develop it.

The plot line and side ventures are either way over saturated so that nothing can be really explained or simply unnecessary. There is an entire side story with Aunt May that could easily have been left out. The constant on again off again talks between Parker and Stacy are buzz kills. Plus Parker makes some really stupid decisions that did nothing but turn everyone against him (including the audience). And he says he just wants to bring hope. Fail.

There are so many eye rolling moments (even for a super hero film) and poorly written lines that at times you want to just laugh, but not in a good way. Some questions do get answered from the first film and they leave it open ended for a part three. If this is just a fluff piece to tie the first and third film together it was much too long. Again the action is there and the film looks amazing but that doesn't cut it these days. If they had trimmed about 40 minutes off the boring parts and left in the action this would have been beyond amazing. I give it only 2.5 out of 5 nose dives. The first film swung for the fences but this one just tried too hard and fell flat.
